Sachtouris Estate, Hydra
House, land & ruin for sale
Hydra Island, Greece
€2,500,000
Stunning 18th Century house to renovate, multiple gardens, 3 ruins to rebuild all with spectacular views.
Real Estate Description
This is a large property with huge potential. It belonged Georgios Sachtouris (1783–1841) who was a Hydriot ship captain and a leading admiral of the Greek War of Independence. There are three parts to this property which is being sold as one lot. The house sits atop the brow of the hill between Hydra Harbour and Avlaki Bay. The garden to the side of the house is shaded by tall pine trees and has spectacular bird's eye views of Hydra Harbour. And to the other side of the existing house, there is a plot of land with three ruins to rebuild, each with a cisterna and all of them looking out to sea over Avlaki Bay and across to the Peloponnese.

Needs complete renovation
The main house is large, with well-proportioned rooms and completely historically intact. It will be a delight to renovate and restore it to its former glory. The top floor has all the major reception rooms that such a building from the 18th Century should have. The ground floor was the working area of the house and is currently laid out as two rooms facing the entrance courtyard either side of the door plus an enormous semi-basement room (because the back of the house is cut into the hillside) where historically the provisions for the house and even animals were kept.
The Admiral's descendants who are selling the property, still use it for holidays. It is just about habitable but as you will see from the photos, the roof needs replacing and the bathroom and kitchen that were added on at some point in the 20th Century need a good architect to remodel. However, the fact that the family still stay in the house, is an indication that if you don't mind 'glamping' a new owner could just about live in it for a while before committing to renovation work.
